Timely second phase polls govt's top priority

KATHMANDU: The first Cabinet meeting held under the chairmanship of newly elected Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba has reiterated to hold the second phase of local level election on a stipulated date.

The meeting was held at the Office of Prime Ministers and Council of Ministers at the Singhadarbar.

The meeting has also decided to give top priority to the reconstruction of the quake damaged properties and provide quick relief to the earthquake victims of the 14 districts.

The Cabinet also decided to ease the supply of daily consumable goods in the market.

Meanwhile, before attending the cabinet meeting NC President Deuba was sworn-in as PM by the President at latter's office in Sheetal Niwas and assumed office today itself.

Earlier, Deuba was elected as the PM by the Legislature-Parliament as he secured 388 votes just 8 short for two-third majority out of 593 votes in the parliament.

As per the provision in the Constitution Speaker Onsari Gharti Magar had called for Prime Ministerial Election in the Parliament after the ruling parties had failed to forge consensus for the new government.

Deuba was elected as the PM after CPN-Maoist Centre, Rastriya Prajatantra Party Nepal, FSJ-N, Samajbadi Janata Dal, Nepal Democratic Forum and Nepali Congress supported Deuba's candidacy in the Parliament.
