Sange (Tanahun), October 28

Locals of Pandit Kunar at Byas Municipality-5 in Tanahun obstructed vehicular movement along the Sindhumarga road today, protesting the death of an elderly in a road accident two days ago.

On Thursday, 79-year-old Krishnamaya Pandit was run down by a bus heading to Damauli from Sange. Fatally injured in the incident, the septuagenarian breathed her last in the course of treatment in Gandaki Hospital of Pokhara. The protesting locals have blamed the driver’s negligence for the accident.

The agitators have put forth a number of demands for safety of passengers and pedestrians. They have alleged that bus drivers used their mobile phones and some of them were even drunk while driving, thus putting others’ lives at risk. The locals have also protested buses allowing passengers to travel on the roofs of the vehicles.

Police said they had detained the driver and had been investigating the incident.
