KATHMANDU, FEBRUARY 7

The Anti-human Trafficking Bureau of Nepal Police arrested a human trafficking convict, who was on the run after Sindhupalchowk District Court found her guilty 10 years ago.

Interestingly, convict Kavita Ghimire was arrested after the police recently rescued 12 Nepali women who were being trafficked to Ethiopia and a few other gulf countries via India.

Ghimire, who hails from Ward No 5 of Jugal Rural Municipality, Sindhupalchowk, was nabbed on February 6 from a hideout in Jadibuti area of Kathmandu. Police suspect she is one of the key players in the human trafficking racket where girls and men from underprivileged families are targeted especially from Sindhupalchowk and neighbouring districts.

On 4 December 2012, Sindhupalchowk District Court handed over 13 years of imprisonment and a fine of Rs 50,000 to Ghimire on the charge of trafficking girls to various countries. Police said Ghimire had escaped from prison during the 2015 earthquakes.
