Trainee doctors take to warpath

Nepalgunj, November 29:

Trainee doctors in Teaching Hospital, Kohalpur, have put a stop to all health services sine die except those in the emergency ward since yesterday to protest the alleged apathy of the hospital administration towards their demands. The strike was triggered when the students of Teaching Hospital College beat up an intern Kanaha Agrawal on Sunday.

A statement issued today by the interns said: “We had urged the hospital administration to punish the culprits and provide us security. The administration failed to do so, and so we have launched a strike.” The statement added: “The college administration threatened we would all be declared failed if students of Medical College, Chisapani, come to join the strike.” The college administration stopped the students from taking part in the strike, the statement said.

Intern doctors chanted slogans against Dr Jitendra Mahaseth, director of Medical College. The statement added: “Instead of fulfilling our demands, Dr Mahaseth blustered and tried to bully us. The strike will continue until our demands are met.” Yesterday, a team led by Dr March Kidwai and Dr Gopal Shresthas reached here to probe into the incident. The team, however, failed to reach a conclusion.
