Transport body halts traffic

JHAPA: Transport Workers’ Union today halted vehicular movement indefinitely in Jhapa district seeking compensation for the kin of driver Deepak Pandey, who was murdered three months ago.

The union yesterday halted traffic for two hours. Pandey, a resident of Garamani, was hacked to death at Morang’s Bhaunne by a gang who had reserved his van from Birtamod. The government had promised to provide Rs 10 lakh to the driver’s family.

Tourists and vehicles have been stranded at Kakarvitta. No vehicle plied in Damak area as well. Meanwhile, Hari Bahadur Baniya, 42, of Chandragadi was critically injured when an unidentified gang hurled stones at a bus coming from Kathmandu.

According to family sources, Bania has been sent to Siliguri of India for further treatment as he could not be treated in a local hospital. A Birgunj-bound truck was torched at Jamungachhi for defying the bandh.
