Transportation disrupted on unrepaired rural roads

Gaighat, July 12

Vehicular movement on a dozen rural roads in Udayapur has been disrupted for a week as the rain-damaged roads still await repairs.

Roads, such as Bhuttar-Murkuchi, Rauta-Ranibas, Betini-Majhkharka, Saune-Foksintar, among others, are damaged at many points due to incessant rainfall followed by landslide in the last week, leaving daily commuters at the receiving end.

The road linking the district’s erstwhile headquarters Udayapurgadi is damaged at various places. “Almost the entire 3-km stretch from Nepaltar to Udayapurgadi is out of shape,” said former district development committee chairperson Hira Kumar Shrestha. “Let alone a four- wheeler, you can’t even operate a two-wheeler on the damaged road; I had to walk it the entire way.”

On the road to the famous tourism site Rauta Mandir Shrine, though a few vehicles manage to operate on the damaged road, the risk is always there. “Though we’re somehow operating vehicles on the damaged road, you never know when there will be a landslide and you’re stranded for days before the debris is removed,” said a driver.

On his part, CPN-MC leader Kamal Rai, chairperson of Triyuga Municipality, said efforts were under way to repair the road. “As it’s not been long since I assumed office, the roads will be repaired in a few days,” he informed.
