Two arrested for involvement in anti-poll activities

Rautahat, November 24

Rautahat Police arrested two persons for their alleged involvement in a campaign launched by Autonomous Madhes Alliance leader CK Raut in the district yesterday. CK Raut has launched a campaign demanding voters’ right to reject all candidates contesting polls.

Autonomous Madhes Alliance’s district coordinator Ashok Singh and deputy coordinator Birendra Kumar Sah were held by police for their involvement in anti-election activities. Sah was held from Pipara Bazaar of Durga Bhagawati Rural Municipality -1 while Singh was held from Hajminiya of Rajdevi Municipality. Though the Apex Court had advised the government to mention right to reject provision in the constitution, it has not been provisioned in the statute. The alliance has protested against the arrest of its activists through a statement issued by the alliance’s deputy coordinator Kailash Mahato.

“The Autonomous Madhes Alliance condemns the act of threatening, torturing and arrest of its activists for raising voice against the existing system of voting in a peaceful manner,” reads the statement. The alliance claimed that the arrest was against the basic norms of human rights and democracy. They have demanded immediate and unconditional release of their members.

Rautahat DSP Ram Kumar Dani said they were held for their alleged involvement in anti-election campaign. “Further investigation is under way,” said DSP Dani.
