Two killed in Nepalgunj mishaps
Nepalgunj, January 11:
Vehicular movement was hit here and tension prevailed on the Indo-Nepal border after two persons, including a student, were killed in separate mishaps today, police said.
Saroj Lakher, 22, of Nepalgunj-15 was killed when an Indian truck (UP 40 FO 341) hit her today, police said. Saroj and her sister Majari were returning from Rupaidiha of India in a rickshaw when the truck hit them. Manjari broke a leg in the incident. Tension was rife on the border after the incident.
Students set the truck on fire near the Mahendra Multiple Campus, while locals took the truck driver and a helper under control and handed them over to police. The truck driver was injured when locals beat him.
Relatives of the dead sought compensation and refused to receive the body.
The relatives demanded that the truck owner be produced before them and compensation be provided, superintendent of police in Banke Ghan Shyam Bhatt said.
A large number of security personnel have been deployed in the site after the incident, police said. Meanwhile, Tulasi Pokhrel, a 10th grader at the Kohalpur-based Tribhuvan Secondary School, who was hurt when a truck hit him at Kohalpur today, died on the way to hospital.
Demanding action against the guilty and compensation for family of the victim, locals halted traffic on the Nepalgunj-Surkhet road and the East-West Highway. Traffic resumed after an agreement was reached to resolve the issue.
