Typhoid, flu spreading fast

Hundreds of people inPanchthar district have been suffering from malaria, typhoid and viral-influenza for the past three weeks. The most affected VDCs are Nagin, Yangnam, Sidin, Prangbung Memeng, Nangi, Phidim, Chokmagu, Lumphabung and Chilingdin. More than 50 patients suffering from malaria, typhoid and viral-influenza are being admitted in the District Hospital daily, said Dr Gunaraj Lohani of the hospital. Most of the fever patients are affected from malaria, he added. Meanwhile, there is lack of medicines in the district due to the Maoist-imposed blockade, said Mitra Lal Kafle, chairman of Hospital Development Committee (HDC). In Yangnam VDC, a training on emergency primary treatment scheduled to begin from yesterday was postponed after all 24 participants fell ill.

There are no accurate statistics on the sick people in the district but there are more than 1000 patients in the district, a hospital source said. Meanwhile, in Tanahun, epidemics of typhoid and viral fever have rendered scores of people ill in Damauli bazaar, the district headquarters of Tanahun, for a week. Stating that about 80 patients are admitted to the Damauli hospital every day, Dr Kedar Senchuri, the medical officer at the hospital, said: “Half of them are found to be suffering from typhoid and viral fever.” Ten patients suffering from fever were admitted to the hospital on Tuesday, a source said.
