UCI halts production

GAIGHAT: Udayapur Cement Industry, the biggest cement factory in the country, has pulled down its shutters after being unable to import raw materials due to the ongoing Madhes agitation.

General Manager of the industry Surendra Poudel said the UCI incurred a loss of Rs 200 million as it has halted production for failure to import raw materials.

Poudel said the UCI had been operating at 70 percent capacity since the last two months. He said the factory needs 100 tonnes of coal and 2,000 litres of diesel on a daily basis.

“The industry cannot afford even the daily administrative expenses,” he informed.

The factory’s monthly expenditure is said to be around 30 million, including Rs 20 million for staff salary and Rs 6 million for electricity and other expenses.
