KATHMANDU: Douglas Alexander, the United Kingdom’s Secretary of State for International Development

will announce tomorrow a nutrition strategy for 12 million

under-nourished children in countries, including Nepal, for the next five years.

A key outcome of the nutrition strategy from the UK Department for International Development (DFID), the strategy will focus especially on children and pregnant women in Ethiopia, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Bangladesh, India and Nepal.

According to DFID, Alexander is all set to announce the special package during the World Food Programme (WFP) conference in Rome, where he will outline steps to tackle the global hunger crisis, which is a major challenge on the road to meeting Millennium Development Goals.

“He will also announce £200 million continued funding for

the ‘productive safety net’ programme in Ethiopia which

has protected 8 million Ethiopians from ‘food shocks’ and

£5 million for the WFP in Nepal, which will help feed 450,000

people for three months,” DFID said today.
