UML condemns Maoists for attacking Pokharel
KATHMANDU: The central committee meeting of the CPN-UML today demanded the government to immediately make public the reality of the Ramechhap incident, in which a group of Maoist cadres deliberately attacked party general secretary Ishwor Pokharel and his entourage at Tiplung VDC in Ramechhap on Sunday.
Passing a special proposal, the party demanded immediate action against Unified CPN-Maoist cadre Rajan Dahal, the mastermind of the incident, and his accomplices. They party also demanded the UCPN-Maoist to apologise for the incident, according to a press statement issued by the party.
“The attack on Pokharel and his entourage was a deliberate move to assassinate him, party politburo members Rabindra Shrestha and Pashupati Chaulagain and former UML lawmaker Dev Shankar Poudel,” the statement said, adding that it was the result of the Maoists’ leftist extremism and war mindset.
It may be recalled that the Maoist cadres in Ramechhap and Dolakha had forced cadres of UML and other parties to flee from the village, following the Maoists’ ouster from the government.
To protest the attack, the UML has decided to hold a rally in Manthali, headquarters of Ramechhap, on June 6. It also decided to apprise National Human Rights Commission and United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and hold all-party meeting in the capital. Pokharel and his entourage were attacked when they were returning to the capital.
