UML leading with NC close behind in vote count

Kathmandu, May 18

The consolidated data of the first phase of local polls show that the CPN-UML has won at least 85 mayoral posts in municipalities or chief of rural municipalities on the fourth day of vote counting.

Similarly the Nepali Congress won at least 80 mayoral posts of municipalities or chief of rural municipalities.

According to the latest poll result provided by the Election Commission, UML candidates were elected in 19 mayoral posts of the municipalities and 66 won chiefs of rural municipalities. The party has been leading in additional 32 local levels.

NC candidates were elected in mayoral posts of municipalities and chief of the rural municipalities including in Dakshinkali Municipality of Kathmandu.

Out of 80 local levels, where NC candidates were elected at least 17 candidates won mayoral posts of municipalities. Sixty-three NC candidates won chiefs of rural municipalities. The NC has been leading in more than 29 mayoral posts or chair of rural municipalities.

The CPN-Maoist Centre is behind in the third position in early election results.

CPN-MC candidates were elected in at least in 38 local levels. Five of its candidates are leading in early vote counting in the mayoral post or chair of rural municipalities.

The Rastriya Prajatantra Party’s, Naya Shakti Party-Nepal’s candidates have won chief of at least one rural municipality each. Three other independent candidates were also elected.

In Kathmandu Metropolitan City, UML mayoral candidate Bidya Sundar Shakya is leading the counting with 6, 240 votes while NC’s Raju Raj Joshi is trailing in the second position with 4,004 votes — as of 9:00pm today.

The EC said that it would take at least one week to complete vote counting of KMC.

Contest between the UML and NC candidates in mayoral posts in Lalitpur Metropolitan City seems tough.

NC’s mayoral candidate in Lalitpur Metropolitan City, Chir Babu Maharjan is leading with 11,843 votes, while UML Harikrishna Benjankar is trailing behind him with 11,103 votes.

Officials at the Election Commission said that results of about 75 percent local levels were unveiled till this evening.
