UDMF wants point 2 of three-point agreement implemented pronto

Kathmandu, August 24

A meeting of the United Democratic Madhesi Front today told its secretariat members to hold dialogue with the Ministry of Home Affairs to ensure that work related to point 2 of the three- point agreement is completed soon.

The Federal Alliance had signed the three-point agreement with the Nepali Congress and the CPN-Maoist Centre on August 2 wherein the two major parties had agreed to move the constitutional amendment process and provide relief to those injured during the Madhes movement, to withdraw cases against UDMF cadres and to give martyrdom status to those who were killed during protests.

Chair of Sadbhawana Party Rajendra Mahato said the government needed to do more to implement point 2 of the agreement.

He said the government needed to declare more victims martyrs, withdraw cases against UDMF cadres and bear the treatment cost of the injured.

Mahato said the government also needed to name other members in the judicial probe committee.

“As far as the amendment to the constitution is concerned, we have not taken any decision today, but we want the government to start negotiation on this issue without further delay,” he added.

Meanwhile, the UDMF today formed a three-member committee to coordinate with the government on its demands.

General Secretary of Sadbhawana Party Manish Kumar Suman, senior leader of Tarai Madhes Sadbhawana Party-Nepal Ram Naresh Ray and Vice Chair of Federal Socialist Forum-Nepal Lal Babu Raut are members of the committee.

A party source said the UDMF was of the view that since restructuring of local bodies was the job of the provincial government, the work should be done only after provincial boundaries were revised.
