Unsafe abortion takes away life of Khotang teenager

KHOTANG: A teenage girl in Khotang district died on Friday, four months after she "unsafely" aborted a foetus.

The deceased has been identified as Sunita Rai (15), a permanent resident of Buipa-4 of Khotang district, after the unsafe abortion around four months ago in the district.

Health professionals said that she died because of excessive bleeding during the medical procedure then.

The girl was allegedly in relation with Dipendra Rai (19) of Mangaltar of the district.

Before the abortion, she had taken some birth control pill brought from a local medical store. Subsequently, she had excessive bleeding, which damaged her both kidneys and ultimately took her life after four months.

She was referred to the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital in Kathmandu for treatment from the District Hospital in Khotang.

However, she had returned to the district in a bid to legalise her marriage with her boyfriend. She was reportedly planning to take help from the District Police Office for the purpose.

But, later, she was found dead in a hotel room in the Diktel, headquarters of Khotang district.

Police have detained Dipendra Rai and Gaiendra Kumar Rai, assistant health worker at the Halesi Health Post, who was involved in the abortion process, for further investigation.

DSP Bidyananda Majhi said “They will be prosecuted according to the existing laws as they have acted against the law".

Her body has been kept at the District Hospital Khotang for postmortem.
