Upreti’s accomplice in gold smuggling case brought to Morang

Biratnagar, June 21

Ram Tiwari, an accomplice of alleged mastermind Chudamani Upreti aka Gore in the 33 kg gold smuggling case and the subsequent murder of Sanam Shakya, was brought to Morang from Kathmandu today.

Tiwari, a close aide of Upreti was arrested by police in Kathmandu around two weeks ago.

Morang police chief SP Manoj Kumar KC said Tiwari was brought to Morang in a plane in the morning. Tiwari has been remanded to 11 days’ police custody.

In a telephone conversation between Upreti and DSP Prajit KC, Upreti had asked DSP KC to see Tiwari for money as per the earlier deal. However, KC had told Upreti that he did not know Tiwari in the conversation.

Middleman Tiwari, who is also a legal professional, had helped Upreti to know people from the police organisation to the court.

Tiwari has been kept in the custody of District Police Office, Morang.

Binod Adhikari, Motiram Shrestha, Rewant Acharya, Madan Silwal and Bhuju Gurung’s aide Lakshyu Gurung were arrested for their alleged involvement in Hundi transaction and gold smuggling. They are also being kept in the police custody. An investigation is under way, police said.
