Kathmandu, January 23:

Newly-appointed Nepali ambassador to the United States Dr Suresh Chandra Chalise presented his credentials to US president George W Bush amid a function at the White House yesterday.

Welcoming Dr Chalise, the US president hailed the Nepali people and the government for the progress made on the ongoing transition to democracy and commended Prime Minister

Girija Prasad Koirala’s role in leading political parties towards constituent assembly polls, a press release issued by the Nepali Embassy in Washington said.

Bush said the US encourages the government and the Maoists to work together to hold the constituent assembly polls on time.

The US president also spoke about the need to address the concerns of the Madhesis and other marginalised groups, the release said.

The US president also reiterated support to Nepal’s journey towards democracy and assured that his country will continue to work with the Nepal government and the international community to foster environment conducive for peace.
