Kathmandu, July 17:

Minister of Local Development Dev Prasad Gurung today revealed that the Village Development Committee (VDC) secretaries in the tarai are seeking transfer to other parts of the country because of the violence perpetrated by tarai-centric oufits.

“We have instances of secretaries seeking transfer from tarai,” Gurung while speaking at the parliamentary Constitutent Assembly Election Special Monitoring Committee (CAESMC) meeting. It may be noted that many VDCs do not have secretaries ever since they were driven away by the Maoists in the past.

The meeting was the third in the series with the first two being with Election Commission (EC) and Home Minister Krishna Prasad Sitaula. The last meeting was held on Saturday. Gurung however defended the activities of the Young Communist League (YCL) cadres in the villages, claiming that they will be helping restore law and order rather than create a law and order problem . Members of parliament had argued that the YCL activities were intimidating. The meeting ended after Minister Gurung was told to do the needful to ensure the presence of VDC secretaries wherever they are posted.
