Vegetable zone set up in Dhankuta

Dhankuta, March 15

The government has set up vegetable zones in Mahalaxmi Municipality and Chhatharjorpati Rural Municipality under the Prime Minister Agriculture Modernisation Project in Dhankuta.

The zones are considered stronghold areas for agro production. “The vegetable zones were created to ensure production of agro products, and to develop agro sector as an independent vocational sector by introducing modern technology, imparting technical knowledge and providing vocational grants,” said PMAMP Chief Harshahang Rai.

Vegetable Zone Implementation Unit Dhankuta also has been established in the district. As many as 82 members including farmer groups, cooperatives and agro entrepreneurs will run the vegetable zones. Dhundiraj Thapa has been designated to lead a nine-member executive committee for the zones. The production of cabbage, peas, spinach, radish, cauliflower, potato, chilli, among others, will be prioritised. The government has set aside a budget of Rs 29.2 million for the project.

Chief Rai added, “A total of 3 structures will be built for the collection of vegetables besides the construction of a training hall at Dhankuta Municipality-10.” Chief Rai said about 47 mini trailers would be provided in agricultural grants and members would also run 24 micro irrigation projects.
