A woman was killed in a khukuri attack in Rautahat on Friday morning, while the alleged attacker was critically injured after being beaten by local residents following the incident.
The deceased has been identified as Renu Devi Jaiswal, 45, of Gujara Municipality–5, Hariharpur. Police said she died on the spot after being attacked with a khukuri at around 10:30 am.
According to the District Police Office, Rautahat, the alleged assailant is Upendra Sah Kalwar, 35, originally from Karaiyamai Rural Municipality–8 of Bara and currently residing in Hariharpur, Gujara Municipality–5.
Following the attack, enraged locals overpowered Kalwar and severely assaulted him before handing him over to police. District Police Office spokesperson DSP Basanta Gautam said the injured suspect was taken to Chandrapur Hospital for initial treatment before being referred to Birgunj due to his critical condition.
A police team led by Inspector Rajesh Kumar Khatri from the Area Police Office, Laxminiya, has reached the scene and launched an investigation. Police said further details, including the motive behind the attack, are yet to be established.
