Woman thrashed on witchcraft charge

Rautahat, May 22

A Dalit woman was beaten black and blue for allegedly practicing witchcraft in Gaur Municipality, Rautahat, last night. The family members of Gita Devi Ram, 30, had beaten her indiscriminately.

Gita said that her sister-in law’s son Bijaya had been sick for the last one year and she was blamed for his deteriorating health. “I was beaten badly after the local shaman accused me of practising witchcraft on Bijaya,” she said, adding that her sister-in-law, her husband and sons — Sanjaya and Ranjaya, among others, had beaten her.

A critically injured Gita is receiving treatment at District Hospital, Gaur. She has demanded stern action against the culprits.

Chandeshwor Raut, a local, said Sumitra Ram, who was elected Ward No 3 chair had accused Gita of practising witchcraft. He stressed action should be taken against the culprits.

Chief at emergency ward of the hospital Rabindra Jha said the injured victim’s health condition was normal.
