Woman’s death sparks tension at Nobel Medical College

Biratnagar, July 31

Tension ran high after the relatives and family members of a woman staged a protest rally over the death at Nobel Medical College, Biratnagar today morning. The protesters alleged that the woman, who had given birth, died due to doctors’ negligence.

Parbati Karki of Jhumka, Sunsari,  was admitted to NMC for delivery Monday. She had her health checked at the same hospital. She had given birth to a baby girl, a second child yesterday morning. She delivered the baby normally. She died of profuse bleeding today morning.

Doctors had taken Karki to the operation theatre saying that her uterus had to be removed at 2:00pm yesterday. After Karki was declared dead at 3:00am today, her family members and relatives accused the doctors of negligence. They accused the doctors of not paying attention to Karki’s treatment after she started bleeding profusely.

“After Karki delivered the baby, she bled excessively. But, the doctors ignored her condition,” Karki’s relative Pusbin Adhikari said. Doctors had rushed Karki to the operation theatre after she collapsed due to excessive bleeding. “She would not have died had the doctors attended her on time,” said Adhikari.

Relatives and family members have refused to take Karki’s body. They have demanded action against the guilty doctors and hospital staffers. Meanwhile, the hospital administration refuted the allegation of doctors’ negligence.

NMC administrative officer Narayan Dahal, said the woman died of excessive bleeding. “Karki bled profusely. Her uterus was operated, but she could not be saved,” said Dahal.
