Women on warpath over tardy probe

Phidim, August 28

Local women in Taplejung have started an agitation over inordinate delay in finding the person behind the murder of Srijana Kurumbang Thalang.

She was murdered on July 14 in a field near her house in Nighuradin of Aathrai Rural Municipality,  Taplejung.

Citing the delay in bringing the murderer to book, women led by inter-party women network have begun agitating. The network organised a corner meeting at Birendra Chowk of the district headquarters today and accused the police of being apathetic about arresting the culprit. It has further warned of stringent protest.

“The murderer hasn’t been found even after months, which has given rise to doubt that the police are trying to hide the criminal,” said the network chairperson Chitra Kumari Chansu (Menyangbo), lamenting the release of a few and preparations to free others arrested earlier in connection with the murder. She further warned of staging a sit-in at the police office unless the long-drawn investigation was concluded fast.

On his part, Acting Police Inspector Hom Prasad Dahal of District Police Office said investigation into the case was being carried out. “In fact, the case is being investigated by three different teams including one from the Regional Investigation Bureau,” he said.
