The x-ray machine used by Mechi Customs Kakadbhitta to control smuggling of goods and commodities from India, has become useless.

The customs office last year had started integrated security checking system here by installing the machine. Having broken down several times after being installed, the machine was repaired and put to use, but it became dysfunctional on June 17 and hasn’t been repaired since.

Meanwhile, the machine has proved a bane for customs staffers and security personnel at this very sensitive border point.

Mechi Customs Kakadbhitta Chief Tek Bahadur Aryal said there was discussion on whether to repair or buy a new machine.

Locals fear that traders and smugglers might import illegal and banned goods to the country taking the advantage of the dysfunctional machine.
