YCL obstructing CA poll process, says Rana

Kathmandu, March 14:

Chairman of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party Pashupati SJB Rana today labelled the Young Communist League as the major obstruction to the constituent assembly election process.

YCL’s obstruction of other parties’ election campaigns, Rana argued, has been a major impediment to holding a meaningful, free and fair election on April 10.

Rana accused the Maoists of not being able to transform themselves to a democratic party. “Maoists still consider the CA election as part of their ‘peoples’ war’,” he said at an interaction here today.

“I want to ask them (Maoists) if they really know the meaning of loktantra because barring other parties’ canvass is undemocratic and against the values of loktantra,” Rana said. He also charged the government of failing to create an environment conducive for the election.

Saying that he informed Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala about the urgent need to improve considerably the environment to ensure a meaningful April 10 election, Rana said: “During my 20-minute meeting with PM Koirala today at his official residence, Baluwatar, I narrated to him in detail about the sorry state of environment for election.”

He said he told PM that the government has still not been able to create an environment conducive for meaningful elections.

He also said that he told the PM how the YCL cadres tried to attack him on his way to his electoral constituency-3 of Sindhupalchowk last week.

“The PM has assured of action against anybody tying to disrupt election environment,” he said adding: “But nothing considerable has happened despite the PM’s commitment.”

Rana expressed his worry over the PM’s failure to transform words into actions and rein in the Maoists.

The Rastriya Prajatantra Party chairman, who claimed to garner third position in the election, however, said his party would not be discouraged even if the Maoists tried to bar them from canvassing or taking part in the polls.

A report from Mahendranagar said former prime minister and Nepali Congress leader Sher Bahadur Deuba this evening arrived in Mahendranagar for election publicity.
