Youth flock to women-run beauty salons
Pokhara, March 30:
Hair dressing is no more the exclusive bastion of men here. Increasingly, the women are adopting this profession. Already, one-and-a-half dozen women here have found jobs in three hair-styling salons that opened here.
The salons provide basic training as well as diploma classes for beauticians and provide employment to teenage girls. Big investments have gone into the three salons that offer services to both men and women. Since the salons are run by women, people prefer to patronise these instead of the usual men-run ones. Normally, Indian men are into this profession. These three women-run salons charge high service fees but youths are attracted to them, said the salon operators.
A parlour operator at Chipledhunga, Rumita Moktan, said her salon gets at least 50 male customers daily. She said the ultra-modern machine at her beauty parlour costs Rs 8 million, and the visitors get state-of-the-art services. Other services available in her parlour are hair transplant, tattooing and tattoo removal as well, she said.
The women’s beauty parlour started to come up in Pokhara some one-and-a-half-years ago. Their old days were not rosy as they marked a loss, they said.
On the other hand, owner of the Deluxe Beauty Salon, Sagun Malla, said that among her customers the majority is female.
Brij Pun of the Beauty Club in Pokhara’s Bhimsen Chowk said she gets enough customers at her beauty parlour.
