3-day nationwide education strike from Feb 7

KATHMANDU Nepal Relief Teachers Central Struggle Committee (NRTCSC) is set to stage a three-day strike in all educational institutions across the country next week, it said on Sunday in a press conference in the capital.

Accusing the government of turning apathetic to its demands put forth in the past, the teachers’ body has decided to shut down all educational institutions spanning February 7 and 9 , said Surendra Gautam, the NRTCSC president.

The relief teachers’ demands include, among other things, scrapping of the agreement reached between teachers and MoE on October 28, 2009, transformation of the relief quota to general quota and provision of granting permanent status to them through internal competition irrespective of age bar.

Neither has the report of the 2008 taskforce been implemented nor the agreement reached between the teachers and the education ministry officials in October 28, 2009 been addressed, rued Gautam.

Meanwhile, other speakers from All Nepal Teachers' Organisation and Nepal Educational Republic Forum have expressed their solidarity with the NRTCSC move, urging the government to meet the relief teachers’ demands at earliest.

The NRTCS general secretary Kuwanchu Lama said there are 40,000 relief teachers across the country, unlike the government data which has kept the number at 38,208.
