GAIGHAT: An unidentified gang beat a cadre of Matrika Yadav led CPN- Maoist to death in Udaypur district on Friday night.

The gang severely beat up Karna Bahadur Thapa, 42, a resident of Rampur Thoksila-2 at 11 pm and he succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment in Gurungchauri Health Centre at 2 am on Saturday, police said.

Thapa who was also chairman of local Machhepuchhre Community Forest had returned to his village at night when two unidentified persons called him of his house at 11 pm citing some personal business. However six others joined the duo and they proceeded to severely beat Thapa after taking him some distance from his house. The assailants fled the scene when they found Thapa’s condition critical.

Locals informed the incident to the police. Meanwhile Thapa was taken to the health centre for treatment but he died in the course of treatment.

Nobody has owned up to the incident yet but a flag of Kirat Janawadi Workers Party (KJWP) was found at the scene of the crime. KJWP's hand is suspected in the fatal assault.

A family source said that KJWP had been demanding Rs 7 lakh as donation from the deceased Thapa for the past two months.
