KATHMANDU: The incessant rain did not deter the Capital’s Jazz fans from making their muddy way to the two venues on the opening night of Surya Nepal Jazzmandu 2009 on October 8.

Actually, Jazzmandu 2009 started early in the morning with a few of the international artistes playing their numbers at the Donelly Hall at St Xavier’s School, which was filled with students from different schools. The duo from Canada — Simon Fisk and Aaron Young — were the first performer. They left the students totally entertained and mesmerised with their instrumental numbers. Jazz never sounded so deep and psychedelic.

The next band was Vatchapuj. The energy of the band members resulting in the creation of a cryptic jazz has to be the distinct quality of this band.

Following the performance, Soulmate changed the jazzy ambience with their rock and blues intermingled jazz numbers. For Soulmate, this is their third performance in Jazzmandu series.

The Brazilian Jazz band Sheyla Costa La Brasileira, made the students stand up and dance to their tunes.

The Valley jams started around 7:00 pm at two venues. Vatchapuj was busy at the House of Music, Thamel and Yuri Honing Trio was at Rox, Hyatt Regency. Vatchapuj was successful in energising the ever increasing crowd and the tables soon had no space left for another bottle of beer.

Smoky ambience, slow movements, neon lights and the raining Jazz numbers made the night a memorable celebration of Jazz music for all those present there.

No introduction, no

obstructions just the flow of

individual musical talents, Vatchapuj left the crowd

satiated with unbelievable entertainment.

“Besides a few of our

numbers, all of the instrumentals were our improvisation and it is just great that each of us share such a

different articulation of music in various forms,”said flautist Vincent Mrtial.

Subtitle, Kabuk and Cross were a few of the numbers they played in the bar.
