Mahato issues stir threat over Madhes state

BIRATNAGAR: Chairman of Sadbhawana Party and Minister for Supplies Rajendra Mahato on Monday threatened to launch an agitation if the agreements reached with Madhesi parties were not implemented.

Talking to media persons at a press conference here, he said, “We will launch an agitation if the new constitution does not ensure Madhes as an autonomous region.”

“There is unity and cooperation among the Madhesi parties on the issues for the welfare of Madhesis,” said Mahato.

He accused CPN (UML), Nepali Congress and Unified CPN (Maoist) of opposing the demand of One Madhes One Pradesh.

Saying that the government would not topple, Minister Mahato said, “If the Unified CPN-Maoist tables a no confidence motion, the government will face it boldly.”

“There is little chance of passing the motion as the Maoists could not get majority votes in the parliament,” he said.

He said that there is a constant tussle between Unified CPN-Maoist and Nepali Congress and CPN-UML regarding promulgation of constitution and rehabilitation of PLA combatants.

According to him, the Maoists want to promulgate the constitution prior to the integration of the PLA fighters while NC and UML want to integrate and rehabilitate the PLA fighters before the promulgation of the constitution, which ultimately delays the timely promulgation of the statue.

He said the ongoing agitation by underground Terai outfits with the demand of autonomous Terai region will be further strengthened if the new constitution fails to ensure Madhes as an autonomous region, Mahato said.

Stating that the Madhesi parties are demanding an autonomous Madhes through a peaceful struggle, he urged Terai based armed outfits to do the same.
