PLA commander trashes rehab package

KATHMANDU: While the Maoist representatives in the technical committee under the Special Committee for Supervision, Integration and Rehabilitation of the Maoist combatants are busy preparing the rehabilitation package, a division commander today dismissed the proposal as ‘nonsense’.

“The rehabilitation package is a ploy to disrupt the ongoing peace process,” said Mahendra Bahadur Shahi ‘Prajwol’, Sixth Division Commander. Talking to this daily over phone, Shahi said the combatants want nothing short of integration of the two armies to form a national army for the new Nepal.

A representative of CPN-UML Deepak Prakash Bhatta said today’s brief meeting of the technical committee agreed to come up with

the final proposal of the rehabilitation package in Sunday’s meeting.

However, a member of the technical committee from UCPN-Maoist, Chandra Prasad Khanal ‘Baldev’, said the Maoists were undecided about the proposal, as the party was yet to discuss the issue. He said his party could prepare the proposal by Sunday. Khanal, who is also the spokesperson for the People’s Liberation Army, said they would propose a cash

incentive for those who wished to go on voluntary

retirement but were undecided on the amount.

For those who wish to mingle with the society, he said, “We’ll propose foreign employment, land and vocational training on individual, and not collective, basis.”
