Prachanda spells out options for PLA integration

KATHMANDU: Unified CPN-Maoist chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' on Sunday revealed that five members of the UN Security Council intend to extend the tenure of the United Nations Missions in Nepal.

Speaking to media persons at his residence in Nayabazaar this morning, Prachanda said his party favours the extension of UNMIN’s term until the peace process ends in the country.

He said that Nepali Congress and CPN-UML are also gradually giving the nod to extend UNMIN’s tenure.

He further said that they are discussing various modalities for the integration and rehabilitation of the PLA combatants.

According to Maoist supremo Prachanda, the modalities for the PLA integration can be any of the following: PLA combatants to be allowed join Nepal Army for those who wish to, PLA to be established as separate force, or establish a special security agency by including the personnel from PLA, Nepal Army, Nepal Police and Armed Police Force. He, however, said that the number of personnel taken from the three security agencies should be equal to the capacity of the PLA combatants in the special security agency. He said those PLA combatants who don’t want to be involved in the integration process can return home with golden handshake.

“We have been discussing on the modalities of PLA integration with major political parties,” he said, adding that the peace process will end immediately after the parties agree on any modality.
