Rajasthani feast at Shangri-la

KATHMANDU: Here’s a new treat for all food fans and connoisseurs in the valley — the Rajasthani Food Festival has begun at the Shangri-la Hotel from August 21.

The desert flavours and the Saffron Restaurant adorned in the typical Rajasthani traditional look has added the authentic touch to the event.

From the stairs that lead to Saffron and Baithak, the interiors have been given the Rajashthani touch. You are greeted by a portrait of a typical Rajasthani woman with a soft smile. Reflecting the traditional gesture of welcoming guests, a plate of ground spices, clay water pots, and hooka have been placed on the side of the painting.

And the buffet that is laid out for you has typical Rajasthani food like Dal Bati, Churma, Lal Maas, Mug Ki Sole, Panner Ka Gatte and lot of other interesting dishes.

The waiters are attired in full traditional Rajashthani costumes as the food is served under a row of handmade thatched roofs.

“We want everything to resemble the Rajasthani way of life, not just the food but the ambience too. And our endeavour seems quite impressive,” said Mohan Khanal, Sr Manger of Sales and Marketing at the hotel.

The ceilings and walls are decorated with the theme of the event. Various pieces of cloths with mirror work also adorn the walls.

And it is not just the food that is Rajasthani — the live ghazal performances and dance numbers add to the ambience of the event.

Shangri La is supporting TEWA, a Nepali NGO, through the Rajasthani Food Festival which is on till August 27.
