TUTH back to business as usual after 17 days
KATHMANDU: Services of the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH) resumed after a 17 day long strike called by the joint struggle committee comprising of doctors, students and nurses on Thursday.
The struggle committee withdrew their strike after the government agreed to form a five member committee under the chairmanship of Jaya Ram Giri, former education secretary with Dr Mahesh Prasad Khakural and Dr Prakash Sundar Shrestha from TUTH, Laxman Khanal, under secretary, Ministry of Education and a first class gazetted officer of the Office of the Attorney General to investigate the TUTH row. The committee has been asked to submit its report within 15 days.
The probe committee was formed as the agitating doctors rejected the previous committee formed under the chairmanship of Dr. Govinda Acharya.
Thousands of patients breathed a sigh of relief after its resumption. At least 1, 3000 patients visit TUTH hospital daily.
The struggle committee has been demanding the resignation of the officials at the Dean's office and a fair probe into the dean's role in leaking out the exam papers.
However the government had decided to scrap the entrance test and reconduct the examination as soon as possible.
