UML, NC leaders slam ultimatum

KATHMANDU: With the Maoists’ 4-day ultimatum inching to its end, senior leaders of the ruling CPN- UML and the Nepali Congress on Wednesday have lambasted the Unified Maoists’ demand regarding upholding of what they call civilian supremacy.

The leaders also termed the Maoists’ subsequent decision to launch a nationwide stir as inopportune and meaningless. At a time when the army chief is taking leave prior to his retirement, there’s no point reviving the CoAS issue, Bimalendra Nidhi, NC general secretary, said.

On Sunday, the UCPN-Maoist had issued the ultimatum demanding the prime minister live up to his commitment made in the agreement signed with the Maoists last July.

The agreement was reached to clear the political stalemate after the Maoists persistently obstructed the House business.

Since its exit from power, the UCPN-Maoist has been protesting the President’s move to reinstate army chief, who was sacked by the Maoist-led government.

The Maoists have been claiming that the civilian supremacy could be upheld by reversing the President’s overruling on the controversial army chief issue.
