Adolescents and elections

I am an adolescent anxiously waiting for almost 16 years to be a certified citizen of this country. With the election flavored air around I  represent many other adolescents like me who have reached the age where we start to impart certain interest in the political state of one’s country realizing that it’s we the “youths” who will build the country further. We have started to search for answers of our unanswered questions about the state of our country. And in that whole list the latest and the most important addition has been the 2074 Local Level Election.

During school years spent with those curricula provided by the Government of Nepal, till date not once can we track the local level elections being either explained or mentioned.

So it’s still amusing how while changing the curriculum every year not once has it been thought important to at least define the local level elections to the high school students as well. This makes it perfectly clear how the pompous advertising of one’s  party’s  symbol in the ballot paper has defined this election to such an important age group as being nothing more than any other election held so far.

Trying to find out the importance, procedure and the structure of this election through the interviews given by the respective candidates and political parties has led to nothing but despair.

Rarely are candidates seen walking door to door to explain the procedure of voting and its importance to the voter card holders - forget about the ones who cannot vote but are equally important in nation building.

Just because one cannot vote does not mean he/she does not need to know about the elections. Specially the group of people who are ineligible to vote but responsible enough to be knowing about what the local level election is are finding it difficult to get a concept about it. The country’s future is at risk when the so-called responsible citizens of Nepal are not able to explain such a highly talked about event to their adolescents.

While still dangling amidst the clouds of confusion regarding the elections, our only wish is to let this election be not only defined by the upcoming pillars as “an election similar to what has been going on till date.”

Let this election not just be justified as an easy break from the educational institutions and nothing new from everyday fake promises provided till date by our leaders.
