Cause and effect

The Metropolitan Police Crime Division has come up with a startling revelation. According to its Crime Pattern Analysis (CPA) report, most homicides in the Valley take place on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Of the 31 homicide cases reported in the first nine months of the current fiscal year, 18 happened on these days. Sundays, Mondays and Fridays had 12, and Wednesdays saw the lowest number (one) of murders as per the CPA. In terms of area, Baneshwor topped the list with six cases of killings during the same period. Among those murdered, the report states, 12 persons were between the ages of 26 and 35, and nine of those killed were Chettris.

Although the report fails to produce reasons behind such a pattern, it certainly is beneficial for the public as Valley residents can now get an idea of the pattern of homicides. But it would be better for the Crime Division to delve deeper into the criminal cases and bring to public knowledge the details of each case. Meanwhile, the CPA findings also show a larger picture regarding the deteriorating law and order situation in the country. Of late, specifically after the success of Jana Andolan II, the country has witnessed an increase in all sorts of criminal activities, including robbery, theft, murder, and looting. The sense of insecurity is pervasive among the people. While greater attention needs to be paid to the law and order problem, the causes of the crimes also need to be investigated so that something could be done to arrest this tendency now and in the future.
