Eight-party confusion:
CPN-UML standing committee member Jhalanath Khanal has said that the time has come to look for a new prime minister. However, he said the announcement of a republic by the parliament will not be acceptable to his party (“Time we looked for a new PM: Khanal”, THT, April 23). The eight-party leaders are making confusing and self-contradictory statements. The interim government represents the eight-party alliance and no constituent member of this coalition can disown government actions. Only a culture of taking responsibility will strengthen the country’s infant democracy.

Retire:
It is time for Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala to retire. He has done what he could for the country. He, along with Home Minister Krishna Prasad Sitaula, have rightly been criticised for their ham-fisted handling of the country’s problems in recent times. It would be the right thing for Koirala to bow out now than to leave under pressure and amid verbal abuses later on.

What’s love?
With reference to Sharamsha Sharma’s Midway piece “Cupid’s arrows”, I don’t think the writer has understood love. He says people ruin their lives by falling in love, which is untrue. Love is all about giving: The more you give in a relationship, the more you get. Love is God’s most beautiful creation. Someone rightly said: Love is silent, love is blind, love is
forgiving, and love is divine.

Not enough:
Some days back, there was a debate over the good and bad aspects of the Miss Nepal contest. The critics contended that women were being objectified by the organisers. But why do the same critics not speak up at the undue exposure of female flesh on other occasions?Last week, I was at the inauguration ceremony of the United World Trade Centre, Tripureshwor, and was shocked to see the “nudity on display”. But nobody protested. Critics should not just concentrate on attention-grabbing events like Miss Nepal contest, but protest against undue exposure anywhere, if it is their conviction.

DV victims:
I fully support the DV victims who were denied visas without valid reasons. The government should do its utmost to help these people. Moreover, the US embassy should be made accountable for the huge sums of money they charge as application fees.

Lara’s exit:
Brian Charles Lara, who has announced his retirement from both forms of cricket, will be missed. Lara was one of the most entertaining batsmen of modern era. Though he broke many records, he was modest about his achievements. Perhaps a batsman like Lara will never be born again. At the end of his last match against England in Bridgetown, he said that he would be happy if he had been able to entertain his fans. He did.
