LETTERS: Learn political culture

I am writing this letter in response to the current political hullabaloo that the young lady of Bibekseel Party Ranju Darshana has made in  public.

I truly admire her political gusto that although being a young lady she has been influencing a large number of people. I find her strident in what she says but that may very well be her crowd pulling tactics, not the longstanding commitment for being  visionary political mega celebrities like Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela.

She needs to be humble and more intellectually heroic than being a weird and wacky political clown in the street for undermining and deconstructing the names of our leaders. This doesn’t mean to say, that she is not allowed to speak, all I am saying is badmouthing other leaders does not make you different from those you think are politically paralysed leaders.

It is high time for Ranju Darshana to learn good political culture by reasonably lampooning others.

MISUSE

It was shocking news that rocked the nation  last Sunday afternoon when the ruling parties registered an impeachment motion against Chief Justice Sushila Karki on different grounds “Impeachment motion filed against Chief Justice Karki” (THT, May 1, Page 1).

The lawmakers had alleged that she violated the constitution and laws, failed to discharge duties sincerely, was incompetent, lacked honesty and violated the judicial code of conduct. This is the first time an impeachment motion has been registered against a CJ in Nepal’s judicial history.

Surprisingly, this motion was registered just two days before the SC was supposed to give a final hearing on a case related to DIG Nawaraj Raj Silwal against Prakash Aryal’s appointment as IGP. Several different opinions from different walks of life came into the floor soon after the news spread like  wild fire.

Legal and constitutional experts termed the motion against the CJ as an immature decision of the ruling parties and direct interference on the judicial system with ill-intention and revenge. Former CJs have urged the ruling parties to immediately withdraw the motion.

However, his party NC has strongly defended the registration of the impeachment motion “Motion to safeguard judicial dignity: Minister Lekhak” (THT, May 2, Page 5).RPP, one of the coalition partners of the ruling parties also decided to withdraw its support to the government over the filing of the impeachment motion.

It has said this motion was a serious setback for the independence of the judiciary and the principle of separation of power “RPP quits govt over impeachment motion” (THT, May 2, Page 1).

The UML has blamed the ruling parties for attacking judicial independence. Common citizens and members of citizen networks had protested against the motion on Monday chanting slogans against the ruling parties.
