LETTERS: Rule of law index
This is in reference to the news article titled ‘’ Nepal 63rd in WJP Rule of Law Index ‘’. It means that recently Nepal has slipped six ranks in the Rule of Law Index-2016 prepared by World Justice Project whose headquarter is in Washington DC, the capital of United States.
Even though Nepal is still ahead of rest of the South Asian countries including India it still needs to do more to enhance its image.
Rule of Law Index means measuring the law of any country where eight primary rule of law factors namely constraints on government powers, absence of corruption, open government, fundamental rights, order and security, regulatory enforcement, civil justice and criminal justice are considered.
After looking at Nepal’s performance, the fact that cannot be denied is that the country needs to work very hard when it comes to improving in maintaining law and order within its boundary.
For it to happen, the government must make all out efforts to improve its performance in all sectors mentioned by the World Justice Project.

Melamchi
This is with reference to the news story “Melamchi told to start water supply within a year” (THT, October 26, page 2).
The Parliamentary Development Committee has directed the concerned authority to start supplying drinking water to the people of Kathmandu Valley.
It has been more than 25 years since the project work was started.
Initially, it was targeted to supply water in 2007. But Melamchi Drinking Water Project revised its target and set the date for 2013 and later in 2016. Now it has set its final target for 2017.
Looking at the pace of work, the new deadline will also not be met as the major work of digging the 27-KM long tunnel has yet to be completed.
Soon after the project starts supplying water in the Valley, it will have to work on the second phase. The committee has directed the project to prepare a detailed project report without any delay.
The government should remove hurdles faced by the project if it wants to accomplish the job on time.

Tourism
Apropos of the news story “Nepal ranked world’s best value tourist destination for 2017” (THT, October 26, Page 2), it is something to cheer about when the national economy is slipping towards negativity.
Lonely Planet, one of the renowned travel guides, has said that Nepal is the hottest destination for all budget travelers. Nepal came out fifth among 10 countries of the list.
The guide has also given a top marks when it comes to provide service and value, which is a positive aspect for tourism entrepreneurs.
Although tourism business had suffered a setback for sometime due to the devastating earthquake in 2015, it has bounced back due to people resilience and strong determination.
