LETTERS: Settle CAN row soon

Politics has negative impact on Nepal’s sports sector as a result of which Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) has lost its credibility at international level “ICC likely to decide CAN’s fate on Wednesday” (THT, April 18, Page 13). International Cricket Council (ICC) has warned that it would recommend punitive action if the CAN dispute is not resolved soon. This has hindered the development of cricket which has gained popularity and experience over the years. Furthermore, such disputes will only add to the disappointment to the cricket players and fans. Nepali cricket team has every potential to grow as an international team provided that the governing cricket body resolves its internal problem without any delay. At least, the government can take necessary initiatives for the construction of an international cricket stadium in the capital as well as in other major cities. In addition to this, allocation of budget is a must for its development. No player can perform to his/her best unless the management body is effective, result oriented and dedicated to the sportsmanship.

Press freedom

This has reference to the news story “Nepal ranks second in South Asia in press freedom: Reporters without Borders” (THT, April 21, Page 1). As we all know that press freedom is also one of the fundamental rights. With the help of this right we can write freely without pressure from anybody or a group. In Nepal, these days’ people are writing and reading widely. Besides that, the print media and online news portals have been providing us a barrage of information round the clock.

World Press Index ranks 180 countries on indicators such as media independence, self-censorship, the rule of law, transparency and abuses.  Recently, we read a sad news that one of online reporters was beaten up by police. This shows the condition of Nepal’s press freedom. But we did not hear anything about the action taken against the police for the atrocity to the reporter.

Good idea

This is with reference to the article “Constitution of Nepal: Implementation main task” by Shiba Dutta Gnawali (THT, April 19, Page 8). I really appreciate his idea. He has raised the question whether can stand on our own for the sake of country. Let’s see how we get the Constitution of Nepal. We got it because of the great devastating earthquake of April 25, 2015. I want to ask our leaders if we need another earthquake to implementation the new constitution. The leaders are not tired of saying that they work for the people and the country.  Do they really love the country from the bottom of the heart? They just pay lip-service. People will believe in the political leadership if they put keep up with their words in actions. A real leader is needed who can show the way and lead the people towards achieving the goal of prosperity.
