THT 10 years ago: House stalemate will end soon, says PM
Kathmandu, May 15, 2007
Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala today assured Speaker Subas Chandra Nembang that he would take steps from tomorrow to resolve the deadlock in the House.
“The Prime Minister told me that he would take initiatives from tomorrow to resolve the deadlock. He assured me he would hold talks with political parties and MPs who have been disrupting parliamentary proceedings,” Nembang told this daily after meeting the PM.
The Speaker met Koirala at the latter’s official residence at Baluwatar in the evening after the PM arrived here from Biratnagar. “The Prime Minister has taken my suggestions positively,” Nembang said. According to him, Koirala was also positive on the demands of the political parties and the MPs.
The Speaker said the House disruption issue has become serious as the CPN-UML and the Rastriya Prajatantra Party have also supported the demands of the Maoists and the Madheshi MPs. Nembang, who is leaving for New York tomorrow to attend a United Nations meeting, said he urged Koirala to hold talks with the agitating MPs and the parties concerned.
The Prime Minister also held discussions with Deputy Speaker Chitra Lekha Yadav on the issue today. Before flying to Kathmandu today, Koirala, also the Nepali Congress (NC) president, said in Biratnagar that the party’s special convention may not be called immediately.
