TOPICS: Gender selection
Bearing offspring is the uninterrupted domain of a parent. It is their prerogative to ascertain the appropriate time of conception in their life.
Besides determining the number of their children is the matter of their conscience.
After conception, it is the privilege of that embryo to develop into the womb and finally take birth after it is fully grown.
Medical technology made it possible to identify the sex of embryo in the womb.
On account of this facility, parents have unethical choices over the sex of their generations. Birth irrespective of the sex is entirely a random phenomenon and it is neither a planned choice nor it can be.
Having a child might be one of the greatest achievements for a couple. And when a couple makes a decision to have a child, there is not only just a baby; there comes a lot of plans and dreams associated with that baby.
The couple surely would have made a lot of plans, and would have thought much about how they want their family to exactly be and look like.
When it comes to determining the gender of the baby, the couple should have the complete rights to choose which gender they want their baby to be as long as it is about balancing and maintaining the family structure, and not about something like sexism, or discrimination between a son and a daughter.
For instance: A couple might have a strong urge to have a daughter and they have been trying too hard but failed and ended up with three sons and no daughter, or vice versa.
In this case, where choosing the sex of a child is just about creating a family balance, it can be really helpful.
The other major scenario where the sex determination can really be helpful is some rare medical conditions, for instance various genetically inherited diseases.
In this situation where, just by choosing the gender if a child can be free from any disorders, and can lead a healthy life; yes, sex determination is totally sensible and should be encouraged.
While on other hand, the scenario is completely different when gender determination leads to gender discrimination, and becomes totally unacceptable.
In majority of the Asian countries, including Nepal, gender selection is mostly about discrimination, and rarely do we hear about a male child being aborted because the couple wanted a daughter.
So, in a nutshell, there are ethical as well as unethical implications of it.
