Warming up with winter tales
Our readers enjoy the warm sun, basking under it while enjoying oranges and peanuts, winter fashion… but they dislike the cold mornings, dry skin and winter related ailments
As the air began to chill, days became shorter while nights came early and I started to put on more layers of clothes, I knew winter was coming. I love the first telltale signs of winter and winter itself. Waking up under snuggly bundles of blankets, and a hot water bag at my feet are the best thing about the chilly mornings. Sipping hot tea under the faint sunlight and warming my hands with heat of the cup is a joy of the winter season.
Putting on warm clothes and snuggling in them, sun bathing during the afternoons and eating oranges as dusk falls — I love winters. Sitting around the fire with family to warm ourselves on cold nights or blowing steam from mouth while pretending to smoke as a child, winter conjures up my best moments. The only thing that I don’t like about the winter season are the heavy laundry and icy cold water.

Every season has its own significance. I like winter because being wrapped up in many layers of clothes gives anyone a fabulous and momentous feeling. During this season, I come up with a great hobby — to sleep for a long time. Also moving around on the quest of some sunlight can also be a good reason to like winter.

I love winter. I love those white dew twinkling on green leaves in the morning. Walking to school in the morning while it is still dark, with the help of vehicles’ light is wonderful moment for me during this season. I like wearing sweaters and woollen scarf with a pair of socks. Likewise, I like my winter’s winter holidays which I like to spend sitting under the warm sun and eating sweet oranges with my family.
— Sampu
Winter brings charm in the surrounding. You can enjoy the sun without getting tan but by enjoying citrus fruits such as oranges and pomelo, and peanuts. But on contrary, it is hard to pass winter for the old people as winter brings them more diseases because of the wintry temperature. As a student, waking up for the morning classes is tough. And the most irritating thing about winter is that the days are shorter and it gets dark really early. But the worst part about winter is the chapped hands and feet along with the freezing breeze of the mornings. But winter is still my favourite season.

Each season has its own set of excitement. In winters, bonfire along with barbecue is one of the best things and it makes me nostalgic — I had gone to Darjeeling for a mountaineering course, where I experienced my first snow fall. Thanks to this season, I can camouflage my tummy by wearing many layers of clothes.
On the other hand, there are few things I don’t like about winter. It gets dark early and by the time I reach home from college, it’s already dark. Waking up early in the morning has always been one of my biggest goals in life and winter is a hindrance. Most of all, I struggle to get out of the bed. Due to cold, I really miss my half-pants, which I really like to wear wherever I go.
— Sampurna Basnet
I am among the people who suffer from this season. I do not like this cold season because days are shorter and mornings are cold. As a student, I have to attend morning and evening classes and winter makes it difficult. Due to freezing temperature, it is difficult to wake up early in the morning during examination and to write exams as well. It is also hard to wash dishes and clothes due to cold water. Winter season also makes people lazy and they do not like to work. Even the surrounding becomes dull with trees sans leaves.
— Smarika Gharti, Hattiban, Lalitpur
In my entire life, I have never liked winter season for the fact that it’s that time when people shiver a lot due to cold. The cold season takes a toll on me. I have suffered from cough, cold and fever during this season. Moreover, people residing in the plains of the country are the ones who have to face the brunt of this season in the name of cold wave including death.
— Pratik Shrestha, Buddhanagar, Baneshwor
I love the fact that winter is around. It is my favourite season. Summer is all about sweaty days but in winter if I can pair my heavy coat with warm pair of boots, I am good to go. Winter in Nepal is warm and comfy especially during the day time when sun is out. Besides who wouldn’t love spending a great deal of time enjoying the warmth of sun while eating roasted peanuts or oranges, drinking hot coffee or hot soup et cetera. But winter is not all perfect as it is accompanied by dry skin, super-shivering cold that swells up my hands and feet. Plus, every year we hear the news of death of people due to cold. Despite all these, I love winter. Seasons are part of our life — they come with both good and bad aspects but we should learn to embrace them.

As everything has its negative and positive aspects, season can’t be far from this fact. For me winter is the season of hot drink, warmth, so on and so forth. It is also a disease-free season for me. The irritating sun doesn’t disturb us at all during these days instead we wish for sunbath. The feeling when we have hot drinks which warms us is a different and positive feeling. The plagues which harmful insects bring are also eliminated.
— Yamuna Sapkota, Chabahill, Kathmandu
Winter is one of my favourite seasons. In winter, the days are warm. Lots of festivals, like New Year’s Eve and Christmas fall during this time — we get to exchange gifts and love among people. Winter is special because I was born in January where I receive a lot of gifts and good wishes. We also get winter holiday — it’s a time where a family can actually go on long trips, and have fun.
— Simran Dutraj
I don’t like winter as it is the coldest season of the year. We have to wear bulky clothes and this makes me uncomfortable. Sometimes, days become too cold that we have to sit under those thick quilts. Due to cold, I often suffer from common-cold and running nose. During these times, we just think about spending time under the warmth of blankets instead of concentrating on our works. Thus, I feel unpleasant, dull and uncomfortable in the winter season. So, I shun it.
— Rustam Kafle
I can make random plans with my friends and jump around to have fun outside on a warm sunny days of winters. In the evening time, I can just cuddle under the warm blanket, and have a cup of coffee with laptop in front of me. Also, that yummy sadeko bhogatey during the day time is one of the best moments of winter season — my mouth waters just by the thought of it. Besides that, for people like me who have oily skin, winter is a blessing — irritating pimples are gone and you can enjoy oil-free skin. Moreover, I also like the dressing up during winter. I feel cool in winter fashion comprising boots, cute ladies’ caps and stylish sweaters and jackets. I am feeling happy that it has arrived.
— Manisha Shah, Samakhusi
Early in morning, my mum used to make a kettle of tea. Father used to burn the wood to red hot. Sister used to fry maize and soyabean. Sitting around the fire, eating maize and soyabean with a full glass of tea and more glasses of tea — it used to be wonderful winter time. And so winter lets me travel back to time when I used to have my loving family.
— Bijay Adhikari, Morang
The extreme cold but warm clothes to ward yourself from it, cool and peaceful environment, snowfall and likeable sun rays are some special effects of my favourite season, winter. This season arrives every year with some exotic surprises and happiness — it has always played a good and vital role in my life. Winter is the time which brings everyone together despite their hectic schedules. They all sit together around the fire, sharing their feelings and hence, strengthening their relationship bonds. Not only this, winter season also invites snowfall which I love. This is the time I like going for long walks with my family members, friends or relatives. Though I enjoy this season a lot there are certain things I don’t like about winter. It makes people lazy, people cannot do their daily activities properly, and people spend most of their precious time sleeping and don’t get out of their homes. So, winter sure is a good and beautiful but there are negative aspects which we must avoid to get the best feel of it.
— Ujjwal Jha, Kupondole, Lalitpur
I prefer summer to winter because time passes quickly in winter. I have the habit of working during the day. The days are short and nights are long in winter so I don’t have enough time to work during winter. This season makes me feel lazy and passive as it’s very cold and frozen outside that I feel like staying inside my home cuddling in a blanket without doing anything. The food becomes cold sooner so it has to be served early, soon after it’s been cooked. There’s a chance of having common cold and it feels uneasy with my running nose. Due to cold, I hate taking bath during this season and as a result I get dirty. We also need to wear woollen clothes to protect our body from cold but these clothes are comparatively expensive — it’s a problem for those who cannot afford it. However, my skin gets better and I have greater appetite as well during winter.
— Subhamitta
I love winter and there are uncountable reasons for it. The scorching heat of summer is transformed and the warm sun feels like heaven in winter. You don’t have to worry about your skin getting tan. The hot nights of summer are changed into a long, relaxed and warm nights. And you won’t feel lethargic like in summer. But the feeling of the struggle of wanting to be warm all day long and laziness are the fact that I don’t like about winter.
— Rahul Karki, Bafal, Kathmandu
Winter is a unique season. I like it because, snow falls during this season and I really like playing with snow. The nights are longer so we can rest more. We don’t sweat in winter and I don’t like to sweat. Our school gives us one month holiday during winter. Similarly, I dislike winter because we need to wear thick clothes. I don’t like wearing thick and uncomfortable clothes like sweaters and coats. I just like to wear shirt, trouser and jacket. In this season it is very cold outside so we cannot ride cycle, scooter or bike. We would need a car. We cannot even go out to play and so it becomes quite boring. Although it is cold and boring, we can enjoy sunbath during the afternoon.
— Amaranjay Bhatt
I am not really a winter person. I don’t like how it gets cold and dark so early. I don’t like it because I was born in the hottest month of the year — May. However I like winter when it comes to clothes. I can wear my favourites sweater, coat, scarf, boots, gloves and many layers of clothes at a time and look stylish. Most importantly winter is about enjoying warm food — rice and gundruk ko jhol and piro achhar. And the best part of the winter is that there won’t be any mosquitoes.

One hardly likes to leave their warm bed and cozy blankets during winter. It is hard to wake up during winter mornings. Staying under warm blankets feels like heaven in winter when temperature drops. But despite this, I’m one of those who loves and enjoys winter. Though I don’t feel like waking up early in the morning for my classes, but once I wake up, the cool breeze of winter makes me feel fresh. Coffee and cold weather is one of my best combos of winter. As I’m a biggest coffee fan, a cup of hot coffee means world to me during winter. Besides, I also love warm attires — colourful woollen and pashmina scarfs along with dark jackets and blazers. And boots are my very favourites. Sun basking is another amazing thing which I love about winter. Sun basking during weekends and having oranges and peanuts at that time is remarkably marvellous. And sun feels so lovely during this season.
— Sandhya Dangol, Bhainsepati, Lalitpur
Every season has its own merits and demerits. But, among all the seasons, winter is my favourite. The roads and fields are not wet and muddy like in the rainy season. Also, you don’t have to endure the scorching sun of the summer and don’t need to be worried about sweating and unpleasant odour. I adore sun bathing of the winter. I like the sensation of winter chill which makes me feel fresh, and I feel like I am really breathing. Also, we are blushing naturally due to chilly weather. In winter, you get to don multiple choices of clothes from top to bottom and look fashionable with topi, headband, gloves, shawl to jackets, coats, jumpers to warmers, shoes, snickers and boots. I also like winter campfire.
The only thing that I don’t like about winter is — cold urticaria which makes my skin dry and itchy. But, we can manage that by staying warm, covering all your skin and giving extra care to your skin to moisturise it.
— Sulochana Panta, Kavre
I like winter. It is my favourite season. I enjoy wearing new warm clothes like woollen jumper. Winter brings snowfall — I like to make snowmen and balls from snow and play with them. I also like to go for ice-skating. Since, it is cold during the winter; I drink hot milk and water to stay warm along with jhaulo.
— Anshu Uranw
I like winter because my birthday falls in winter — December 30. We will celebrate my birthday as well as birthdays of two other girls in the hostel on December 23. I will help bake my own birthday cake of many layers. Then, we will celebrate my birthday at the night before eating our dinner.
— Chiranjee Uranw
I don’t like winter because I feel very cold. We celebrate Christmas in the winter season. I don’t celebrate this festival but I wish to celebrate Christmas. So, this year, we will be celebrating it at the hostel with Christmas tree and by singing Christmas songs and baking Christmas cookies.
— Isha Mehta
I like winter because Christmas falls in the winter season — I am not a Christian but I celebrate it. And I don’t like it because it’s cold. And winter would be great if I were to live where we could experience snowfall. I would play with snow. I also like winter because I love wearing mittens but I am allergic to woollen clothes. The good thing about winter is the winter beak which is one month long. In short, winter is fun except it is cold.
— Salina Humagain
Winter season is one of the good seasons. During winter, we can see frost every morning. The sky and environment are clear and clean. People prefer woollen clothes like coat, jacket, muffler, shocks, shoes, caps, trousers, gloves et cetera. Similarly, warm foods, hot drinks (water, tea, coffee) are mandatory wants of human beings. In the winter season, vegetables and food remain fresh for a long time. If we live in hilly and himalayan regions, we can see and play snow. Winter days are green whereas, the days are sweaty in summer.
I don’t like winter because the winter crops grow very slowly which badly affects the entire farmers. Our body starts to become very rough, while hands, legs, cheeks are chapped and swollen. Many people also suffer from gastric because they drink more tea, coffee during these cold days.
Due to cold people suffer from different kinds of ailments like headache, common cold, backbone pain, pneumonia and so on during the winter months. Earlier I also suffered from back pain and I had to consult a doctor. Due to cold, most of the birds and animals lose their life as well. Despite all the negative aspects, winter season is my favourite season.
