Travel and gatherings banned in Baneshwor, Singhadurbar, Narayanhiti, and other sensitive zones
KATHMANDU, SEPTEMBER 8
Following the escalation of Gen Z protests against corruption and the government's social media ban, the Kathmandu District Administration Office has extended the curfew across key areas of Kathmandu Metropolitan City from 1:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. on 2082/05/23 (Nepali calendar). The order prohibits all travel, gatherings, demonstrations, processions, assemblies, and pickets within designated zones.
The new curfew order covers four major areas:
Sheetal Niwas (President's Office) – Maharajgunj: Northeast to the National Police Training Academy Chowk, south along Samakhusi main road to 100 meters beyond, southwest from Samakhusi Chowk to Samakhusi Khola.
Harit Griha (Vice President's Office) – Lainchaur: From Kesharmahal Chowk to Lainchaur turning, extending to the Hotel Mall boundaries.
Narayanhiti Durbar Museum Area: From Kesharmahal Chowk to Narayanhiti Museum south gate, Jay Nepal turning, and Mahendra Salik.
Singhadurbar Area: From Bhadrakali Temple (Tin Kunne Island) east to Singhadurbar main gate; north to Padmodaya Ma.Vi.; east past Auditor General's Office to Anamnagar; northeast to Hanumanthan temple; south in front of Supreme Court to Department of Archeology Chowk.
Earlier, a curfew from 12:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. was imposed in Baneshwor after protesters stormed the Federal Parliament premises, breaking barricades and clashing with police. Authorities had used tear gas, water cannons, and rubber bullets to disperse demonstrators.
According to the notice, the curfew order are issued in accordance to the Article 6(A) of the Local Administration Act, 2028, covering sensitive administrative and government areas. The Nepal Army has also been deployed to support security forces amid escalating tensions.
The curfew comes after violent clashes during Gen Z protests, which have injured journalists and civilians, prompting authorities to impose restrictions to restore law and order.
