KATHMANDU, SEPTEMBER 18
Interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki held a phone conversation with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi today.
During the conversation, Indian PM Modi extended heartfelt condolences for the recent tragic loss of lives in Nepal and expressed India's steadfast support for Karki's efforts to restore peace and stability in the country.
"Had a warm conversation with Mrs. Sushila Karki, Prime Minister of the Interim Government of Nepal. Conveyed heartfelt condolences on the recent tragic loss of lives and reaffirmed India's steadfast support for her efforts to restore peace and stability. Also, I extended warm greetings to her and the people of Nepal on their National Day tomorrow," Indian PM Modi wrote in his X account.
According to a press statement issued by the Press Information Bureau (PIB) of the Government of India, PM Modi conveyed India's readiness to continue working closely to further strengthen the special ties between the two countries and India's full support to Nepal in its efforts towards restoring peace and stability, and for the progress of the people of Nepal.
Prime Minister Karki thanked Modi for India's steadfast support and reciprocated the desire to further strengthen the special ties between the two neighbors. The leaders agreed to remain in close contact, the statement added.
During the talk, Prime Minister Karki conveyed her heartfelt greetings and best wishes to Prime Minister Modi on his 75th birthday and appreciated the Indian Prime Minister for his message of solidarity, according to the press release issued by the Nepal's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. She further stated that responding to the call of recent Gen-Z movement, elections will remain topmost priority of the present government, with strong determination for accountable, responsive and corruption-free governance, reflecting the aspiration of the youth.
The Indian Prime Minister assured of full support and cooperation as per the priorities of the Government of Nepal, release further stated.
"PM Karki further expressed that the historical and close relationship between Nepal and India will continue to be strengthened by multifaceted people to people ties."
Both Prime Ministers reaffirmed their commitment to continue the strong momentum of bilateral cooperation and partnership for the benefit of the peoples of two countries, the MoFA noted.
The scheduled phone talk was originally planned for Tuesday but was rescheduled to Thursday.
Sushila Karki, Nepal's first woman prime minister, was sworn in on September 12 at a special ceremony held at Sheetal Niwas, following the collapse of the KP Sharma Oli-led government triggered by the Gen Z protests on September 23–24.
Earlier, shortly after her appointment, PM Modi had also publicly extended his best wishes to the newly appointed interim premier, highlighting India's commitment to Nepal's peace, progress, and prosperity.
This latest exchange underscores the continued diplomatic support between the two neighboring countries during a period of political transition in Nepal.
