Nepal Journathon on COVID-19, a one-day hackathon, brought together 25 journalists, health professionals, and tech activists to find and create long-term solutions to the current challenges in pandemic/disaster response in Nepal

KATHMANDU, FEBRUARY 18

COVID Fighter app won the 2021 Nepal Journathon Prize during the Nepal Journathon on Covid-19 organised by Nepal Investigative Multimedia Journalism Network (NIMJN) on Thursday.

The app will use Bluetooth Low Energy and Decentralized Privacy-Preserving Proximity Tracing system for contact tracing, mask reminder, hand wash reminder, and coronavirus detector.

Team Danfe and team Ullus secured the second and third positions respectively for their initiatives.

Nepal Journathon on COVID-19, a one-day hackathon, brought together 25 journalists, health professionals, and tech activists to find and create long-term solutions to the current challenges in pandemic/disaster response in Nepal. They worked in five different groups to come up with effective solutions related to the current pandemic facing the country.

At the start of the program, Dr Ramu Kharel from Brown University Alpert Medical School and Rajneesh Bhandari, a global multimedia journalist and NIMJN's Chief Editor highlighted some of the innovations in the health and media sector.

A selection team comprised of Dr Kharel, Bhandari and Sharada Gyawali, a development specialist selected the top three ideas based on feasibility, implementability, innovativeness, importance in the context of Nepal and quality of the presentation. Top three ideas will be awarded RS 50,000, Rs 30,000, and Rs 20,000 respectively.

"It was my first experiences working with different sector and found this program interesting. Our final product is to support the public to reach services. So, that the government can support and implement our application for the public betterment," Dr Tiwari from the first prize-winning team said.
