ACC TROPHY 2006 : Nepal take on Bahrain

Kathmandu, August 21 :

Nepal will take on Bahrain in the quarter-final of the sixth ACC Trophy at Kelab Alam Stadium in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday.

As the championship is the gateway for the World Cup Qualifying Series Division II, Nepal is now faced with no option other than winning the title after Oman was ousted from the league stage and United Arab Emmirates (UAE) tied with Qatar in other quarter-final.

The UAE and Oman are the finalists of the fifth ACC Trophy which automatically puts them to the Qualifying Division II.

Nepal had three options to qualify for the Division II coming into the tournament — finish third if the last year’s finalists reach the final, reach the final with either UAE or Oman its opponent, or win the tournament. After the end of the league matches, the equation

is such that Nepal have to win championship to make it the Qualifying Division II.

Nepal entered the quarter-finals as group winners while Bahrain advanced as runners up from its group with two wins and a loss.

Nepal had defeated Bahrain by eight wickets in the U-19 ACC Cup in 2005 but this would be the first meetings between the senior teams.

The winners of the match will either meet UAE or Qatar in the semi-final on Thursday.

Nepal was ousted from the quarter-finals in the last edition.
