Almeria stun Real

Madrid, February 3:

Juan Gutierrez and Alvaro Negredo scored on Saturday to lead Almeria past Real Madrid 2-0 and snap the Spanish league leader’s eight-game winning streak.

Gutierrez converted in the 16th minute after a deflected ball fell directly into the Almeria defender’s path. Negredo scored his seventh goal of the season from the penalty spot in the 47th after the former Real Madrid youth team player was fouled by Fabio Cannavaro.

Madrid has 53 points while second-place FC Barcelona, with 44 points, can move to within six points by beating Osasuna on Sunday. Villarreal is next with 38, while Atletico Madrid has 37. Almeria moved up to seventh with 32.

Pablo Amo redirected Fabricio Coloccini’s cross at the far post in the 36th to lead Deportivo La Coruna 1-0 over Real Betis in a late match. Betis goalkeeper Ricardo saved a penalty attempt by Juan Rodriguez in the 77th. Deportivo’s second straight win moved it to 17th with 23 points, one above the relegation zone. Betis stayed in 14th with 25.

Premiership

LONDON: Emmanuel Adebayor scored two goals and Arsenal beat Manchester City 3-1 to go two points ahead in the Premier League after Manchester United could only draw 1-1 with Tottenham.

Defending champion United, which led the Gunners on goal difference going into Saturday’s games, needed a last minute equaliser by Carlos Tevez to avoid defeat after Dimitar Berbatov put Spurs ahead in the 21st. The results mean that Arsenal has 60 points and United 58. Chelsea is third with 54 after a 1-1 draw at Portsmouth and Liverpool moved up to fifth with a 3-0 victory over Sunderland.

Nicolas Anelka put Chelsea ahead after 55 minutes only for new signing Jermain Defoe to level for Pompey in the 64th. The draw meant that the Blues failed to make it a club record 10 league wins in a row.

Fourth place Everton had Andy Johnson’s goal disallowed for offside in a 0-0 draw at Blackburn.

After taking only five points from its previous five games, Liverpool outplayed Sunderland with second half goals by Peter Crouch, Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard’s late penalty.

Last place Derby held Birmingham 1-1. Sebastian Larsson gave Birmingham the lead in the 68th minute and Emanuel Villa equalised a minute from the end. Kevin Kilbane’s goal gave Wigan a 1-0 victory over West Ham while Bolton won 2-0 at Reading with strikes by Kevin Nolan and Heidar Helguson.
