Singh, Sunuwar claim titles

Lalitpur, August 6

Arhant Keshar Singh and Bhawana Sunuwar won singles titles of the Dhana Laxmi Maharjan Memorial National Squash Tournament here today.

Singh came from a set down to beat Amrit Thapa Magar 8-11, 11-5, 11-7, 11-13, 12-10 in the men’s singles final at the Squash Complex at Satdobato. Recently, Singh had defeated Magar to win the Open Squash Tournament title at the same venue. Hira Bahadur Thapa and Prabin Bir Singh Kansakar finished joint third. Singh earned Rs 15,000, while runner-up Magar got Rs 8,000. Thapa and Kansakar received Rs 3,000 each.

In the women’s section, Sunuwar comfortably edged past Bipana Blon in straight sets of 11-5, 11-7, 11-1 and won Rs 9,000. Blon received Rs 5,000. Sapana Blon and Krishna Thapa Magar came third and got Rs 2,000 each.

Meanwhile, Amir Blon claimed the boys’ U-17 singles trophy, while Gelje Tamang won the U-13 singles title and Lal Bahadur Gurung finished first in the above-50 veteran singles category.

Meanwhile, Nepal Squash and Rackets Association President Kishor Maharjan honoured 12th South Asian Games bronze medallists Bhawana Sunuwar, Krishna Thapa and Bipana Blon with Rs 20,000 each. They had won the medal in the women’s team event.
